There are different versions of this popular story. What you are about to read is one of the best-known versions of the legend of Iaçá.
When food began to run out.
The legend says that an Indigenous community faced severe food scarcity. Chief Itaki then made an extreme decision to control population growth.
The daughter who lost her daughter.
Among the children sacrificed was Iaçá’s newborn daughter. Desperate, Iaçá cried for days and asked Tupã to show her people another way.
On a moonlit night, Iaçá heard a child.
When she left her hut, she saw her daughter beside a palm tree. She ran to embrace her, but the girl disappeared. Iaçá remained beside the palm, crying until she lost her strength.
What was born from pain fed a people.
The next day, Iaçá’s body was found beside the palm, her eyes turned toward the dark fruits. Itaki ordered them gathered. They became a strong, nourishing food that fed the community.
